What Is Anodising and What Does It Give Aluminium?

When aluminium meets air, a thin oxide layer forms on its surface all by itself. That layer is protective, but it is very thin and easily damaged outdoors. Anodising takes this natural process, brings it under electrochemical control and builds the layer up many times thicker.

Paint versus anodising

Paint is a coat added on top of aluminium; over time it can scratch, blister and lift at the edges. Anodising works into the metal instead, and the oxide layer becomes part of the surface itself. That is why peeling is simply not a failure mode on an anodised profile.

What it delivers in practice

  • Corrosion resistance — On façades exposed to damp and salt air, the surface holds up for years.
  • Scratch resistance — The oxide layer is considerably harder than the aluminium beneath it.
  • Colour stability — Little risk of yellowing or fading under sunlight.
  • Easy maintenance — A damp cloth and a neutral cleaner are usually enough.

On parts that stay outdoors and are touched by hand every day — railings, handrails and balcony profiles — anodising is not a preference but a requirement.
